Important news concerning the Abbey of Zirc in Hungary

We inform you that by a Decree of the Dicastery for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life dated 15 May 2023, the Cistercian Abbot General Mauro-Giuseppe Lepori was appointed Pontifical Commissioner for the Cistercian Abbey of Zirc in Hungary, to remedy the difficulties of the institutions and to help monastic life. To assist him, the Dicastery appointed Abbot Cirill T. Hortobágyi of Pannonhalma and Abbess Olga Horváth of Kismaros as co-commissioners.

The Papal Commissioner and his assistants exercise all the rights and have all the duties that the universal law and that of the country assigns to the Abbot of Zirc and his Council, both towards the monastic community and the institutions.

In this situation, Abbot Peter Verhalen of Dallas takes over as President of the Zirc Congregation.

We ask the Holy Spirit of Pentecost to assist the Zirc Community and Commissioners.
