Since 1942, a statue of Saint Bernard, patron saint of the Cistercian order, has stood on the central grounds of Mariënkroon Abbey in Nieuwkuijk. This statue was made by the then well-known Dutch artist Willem Wiegmans, who also had two sons who were part of the monastic community of the Cistercians of Nieuwkuijk. The statue was transferred with the transfer of the Abbey to the ecumenical community Focolare in 2014.
Because the statue was in poor condition, the initiative was taken to restore the statue. In a collaborative project between the Mariapoli Marienkroon Foundation, the Mariënkroon Abdij Foundation and the current residents of Mariënkroon, Mr. John Schellekens was asked to restore the image. This assignment was completed successfully.
